Concept notes with formative activities

Rich content in the Online Environment and the User Experience

It pertains to the almost total involvement of the user into the functions of the computer. It is done through beautiful graphics, great sound and a total devotion to user interaction with regards to design. It is said that this method is a good way of getting your point through a class wherein the student's attention becomes totally focused on the lessons because of the visuals. You can also apply this in meetings and other such activities. It is probably the closest thing we to a merge between the user and the device.

Content is not "stuff we write to rank higher" or "infographics" or "long form articles." Content is anything that communicates a message to the audience. Product descriptions, company story, images, that video of your company picnic that someone posted on your site three years ago and shows everyone dressed as Muppets are all examples off content. If it says something, shows something, or otherwise communicates, it is content.

Online Content are the contents that can be found in your website. It can be in form of text, images and videos, but can also include music and other sounds. In business websites, it is written from the point of view of one person or organization, and aims to inform and persuade potential new customers. On social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, online content is posted by thousands or even millions of contributors, creating a vast online discussion board that is constantly being enriched.

5 Elements of the Online User Experience

1. Usefulness of the Website

This is, perhaps, the most fundamental question asked of each website by its users; “How is this useful to me?”

And the answer, of course, is relative to the individual. One of the reasons that we define our users before we develop a website is because we need to be able to show usefulness to an audience.

For example, you decide to develop a website about cars and their maintenance. To some people this will be fantastically useful. To me, as a lifetime non-driver, it has very little value and I’m not expecting to take up a career as a mechanic so it will probably remain fairly useless to me throughout my life.

2. Adherence to Functionality

Or as we prefer to think of it; “Does it do what it says on the label?” People expect a website to work. That’s all adherence to functionality means – “does it work?”

Dead links, for example, are a case of broken functionality. Failure for a site to display properly on a particular screen or in a particular browser is a case of broken functionality. And so on…
It stands to reason that a user’s experience will be less than perfect if they find that your website is a buggy mess that doesn’t deliver on the promise of that site doesn’t it? This is what makes testing so important. Much of the “does it work” testing doesn’t require users – it just requires a methodical test plan that is executed on a regular basis.
However, because you’re not involving users in these tests – it doesn’t mean that the outputs won’t affect user experience. Keeping your site well-maintained is a vital step in delivering on people’s expectations of your site.

3. Usability

Some people tend to see usability as the whole of UX design (while others see UX design as solely UI design) but that’s not true. Usability is a part of UX design and an important part but it’s not the whole of the remit as we’ve already seen.

Usability is quite simply a measure of how simple it is for a user to learn the site (particularly for infrequent or brand new users) and how easy it is to use the site in the long-term (for regular visitors).

For example; you might find that a new website is available to do a financial health check on your business. It’s been brilliantly developed and every page and feature works as it should. However, it’s also confusing and complicated and there’s not enough information available to make the health check intuitive. This is a usability failure.

4. Influence

Most websites are designed to serve a commercial purpose. To sell products, services, subscriptions, etc.
A critical component of user experience is the ability to influence your users to do what you want them to do. The key metric of influence is usually the conversion rate.
Conversions may be many-staged and may differ from website to website. It may be that the critical component is to get someone’s e-mail address to join a list. It may be that you just want a visitor to buy a product. It may be that you want them to join a list and then buy a product.
Gaining influence in the user experience requires creating an environment of trust (no-one’s going to convert if they don’t trust you) and of persuasiveness in that environment (how you encourage people to convert matters).
You can deliver on usability, adherence to functionality, and usefulness and still fail the influencing test.

5. Visual Design

Different audiences react differently to different elements of design. there are plenty of people that don’t mind this kind of visual design. There are people who love pastel colors and people who hate them. There a people who don’t mind scrolling and people who will never scroll and so on… Visual design plays a critical role in the user experience and once again, the users will know what they respond to and what they don’t respond to.

Interactive means that the user or audience has control over the program, website or presentation.

Multimedia sometimes called as rich media, provides more dynamic elements. By definition, rich media is any form of content that deviates from normal text and static images and engages with the end user.

When it comes to developing content that truly creates an “experience” for the user, it needs to be interactive, informative and must make the user feeling they gained something valuable.

A great way to accomplish this improved user experience is to create rich media content. Audio clips, music, video, virtual reality, and flash animation all fall into this example.

Interactive Multimedia -any computer-delivered electronic system that allows the user to control, combine, and manipulate different types of media, such as text, sound, video, computer graphics, and animation.

Multimedia Content that you can find on some websites

  • Videos-through video hosting sites, you can take a video and show it to the entire world.

  • Online Games - game developers now create what is called “browser-based games.”
  • You do not need to install these games to your computer as they run in most updated web browsers
    • Ex. Candy Crush, Y8.com
  • Online Test - online survey forms and tests that automatically display the results when finished.
    • Ex. Free-IQTest.net
  • Courseware-Online courses that simulate the classroom online
    • Ex. E-learning Courses using a Learning Management System such as Udemy, AMA Online Learning
  • Podcasts - An episodic series of audio or text files streamed online. It is also called as online radio.

    • Ex. YouTube series/shows like Video Game High School, Good Mythical Morning, Netflix

ICT as a Platform for Change

Role of ICT in Recent History

On Pork Barrel Protest

The so-called “Million People March” is one of the largest public demonstrations since President Benigno Aquino was elected in 2010 on an anti-corruption platform.

On Yolanda Typhoon

Recent storms in the Philippines gave birth to the PEOPLE FINDER data base powered by Google. During the typhoon Yolanda, the People Finder was a vital tool for people across the globe to track the situation of their relatives. This proved to be successful and is now adapted by more.

On Covid-19 Pandemic

DOT launches 'SafePass' app to help businesses under new normal. Tourism-related establishments can now count on an application called SafePass to operate under the new normal that was launched by the Department of Tourism. It basically provides digital solutions when it comes to space capacity planning, as in how many people can actually come inside (an establishment); contact tracing, to make sure that we're able to monitor the movements of customers in the establishment, and protocol enforcement. Through SafePass, establishments will be able to determine their maximum capacity provided social distancing requirements are in place, explained the official. Meanwhile, customers may use the app to help map out their visit to their establishment of choice. The app also contributes to the ongoing shift to cashless, contactless transactions, with the pandemic forcing the public to reduce as much physical contact as possible

ICT as Medium for Advocacy

Advocacy - is a process of supporting and enabling people to: express their views and concerns, access information and services, defend and promote their rights and responsibilities.

Change.org
- is dubbed as the world’s platform for change where anyone from the online community can create a petition and ask others to sign it.
- gives access to more people by allowing the online community to affix their digital signatures on a petition.

Change.org’s mission is to help people from around the world create the change they want to see.

Change.org in the Philippines

The petition to publicly execute Police officer Jonel Nuezca released was the fastest ever-growing petition from the Philippines. 52-year-old Sonya Gregorio and her 25-year-old son Frank Gregorio were brutally murdered in Paniqui, Tarlac, Philippines by a police officer, Jonel Nuezca. The purpose of this petition is to make sure that the suspect is held accountable for this terrible crime and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
